Boyd Leard

District 1 Souris-Elmira

Souris, PE - Small business owner and municipal councilor, Boyd Leard is the Green Party of PEI candidate for District 1, Souris-Elmira, in the 2023 provincial election. In 2020 Leard was elected to Souris Town Council for the first time and in 2022 was re-elected and serves as Deputy Mayor of the town.

Born, raised and educated in Souris, Leard is a partner in Lea-Mac, an electronics and marine supply business. His family has owned businesses in Souris since 1898 and he has been an entrepreneur and business owner in the town since his adolescence. Leard graduated from the Holland College Electronics program and has completed training in Emergency Measures, as well as business.

Leard has been an active contributor to his community since high school and sat on the boards of several organizations including the Eastern Kings Arena Board, the Public School Board, and the Green Party of PEI Provincial Council. Through his volunteer work he has been able to share his knowledge of electronics to a wide range of people, including Air Cadets and high school students.

“I have always been interested in politics and during the last few years I have been concerned by the lack of investment in the Eastern end of PEI. I saw that rural PEI was being largely ignored by the traditional political parties. There seemed to be very little, if any, long term vision or planning,” says Leard.

“I talk to my community every day in my business and people are struggling with the cost of living, with housing, and with healthcare. We must listen to Islanders and make decisions based on evidence and what we hear. The Green Party has values that reflect this way of doing business, and I am committed to helping the Green Party make a difference in rural PEI.”

Leard lives in Souris with his wife, Joyce (Plourde). He is stepfather to one son and grandfather to three children.
