Trish Altass

District 23 Tyne Valley-Sherbrooke

Summerside, PE - Tyne Valley-Sherbrooke MLA Trish Altass is the Green Party of PEI candidate for District 23, Tyne Valley-Sherbrooke, in the 2023 provincial election.

“Being of service to my community takes on many forms - from individual advocacy, to helping out at community events, to advocating for improvements to community resources such as Green Park and Belmont Park, to fighting in the Legislature for local and accessible primary healthcare services, workers rights, measures to make life more affordable and more,” says Altass.

Since being elected in 2019, Altass has served as the Opposition Critic for Health and Wellness, and is currently the Opposition Critic for Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture. She is also the Official Opposition Whip. Altass also chaired the Special Committee on Poverty that provided recommendations for a Basic Income Guarantee program for PEI. As an MLA she successfully amended the Health Services Act to improve healthcare governance, amended the Police Act to better align the complaint process with best practices, and amended the Employment Standards Act to include pay transparency measures that are a first in Canada. She also tabled paid sick leave legislation that was voted down by the majority government.

Before being elected, Altass was a community-based researcher at the Young Lives Research Lab formerly at UPEI, and adjunct faculty at Mount Allison University.  She was a founding member of the Community Engaged Scholarship Institute at the University of Guelph focused on building community-university partnerships, community  engagement and social innovation.

In addition to her research work, she has been a union leader, serving as women’s council chair and local president of CUPE 3913, and active member of CUPE 1870. Trish was also a member of the PEI Working Group for a Livable Income and is currently a member of the Summerside Lions Club.

Altass was born in Eastern PEI, and after many years living away, she relocated to the Summerside area where she lives with her partner and child.
